First, a multi‑faceted ring shell with a polygonal cross‑section or a multi‑faceted sectorial shell closed at both ends is welded. After the interior is filled with a pressurized medium, internal pressure is applied; under this pressure, the polygonal cross‑section gradually transforms into a circular shape, ultimately forming a circular ring shell. When selecting stamped elbows, careful attention must be paid to material selection, as the choice of material can, to a certain extent, determine the overall quality of the pipeline. Steel pipe (or black iron pipe) was once the more popular choice for conveying water and combustible gases. Steel pipe is still widely used in many homes and businesses to transport natural gas or propane fuel, and it serves as a highly favored heat‑resistant material in automatic sprinkler systems. In commercial buildings, fittings are employed to convey heating or cooling water, as well as in heat exchangers, air‑conditioning systems, variable‑air‑volume (VAV) air‑handling units, and other HVAC equipment. Steel pipes are joined by threaded connections; sometimes tapered threads are cut at the pipe ends (see National Pipe Thread), and sealing agents—such as thread‑sealing compounds or thread‑sealing tape (also known as PTFE tape)—are applied.

Working capacity of the elbow joint

The working performance of an elbow is closely related to its stress state. Both theoretical calculations and on-site measurements of the operating stresses in pipe fittings reveal that the arc‑starting point of the elbow is particularly sensitive to external loads. Apart from internal pressure and self‑weight, the primary external loads arise during pipeline startup—namely, thermal expansion of the pipe metal, pipeline vibrations, and abnormal behavior of supports and hangers. A push‑forming machine employs a horn‑shaped mandrel or core rod that gradually widens from the tip toward the base. The forming process involves diameter expansion combined with bending, with rear support provided to maintain stability. For stainless steel pipe fittings, the blank pipe section is slipped over the mandrel, while a gantry frame secures the mandrel at the rear. A carriage positioned between them may be driven hydraulically or mechanically.
